ERG CHEGAGA

“Erg”, an Arabic word, basically means “dune field” which describes vast and flat areas of the Sahara Desert. These dunes are created by the wind with little or no vegetation. Erg Chegaga is the first desirable destination for travelers and tourists. Erg Chegaga is located in the Drâa-Tafilalet area. The Erg is located about 60 km west of the village M’hamid El Ghizlane, located about 98 km south of the city Zagora. Erg Chegaga is surrounded by the Bani mountain/Djebel Bani (north), rocky M’hamid Hammada (east), Erg Smar adjacent to Erg Zahar (southeast), and the Iriqui National Park (west). The sand dunes in Erg Chegaga are different in terms of weight (15 km) and height (60-300). Erg Chegaga is the highest untouched erg (dune) in Morocco.
Oum Lâalag is a sacred oasis located 50 km southwest of M’hamid El Ghizlane, Zagora, Morocco. Oum Lâalag exists near the old trans-Saharan trade road to Timbuktu and nearby the Algerian border. The sacred oasis of Oum Lâalag emerges like a mirage. It extends over 15 hectares. Oum Lâalag takes its name from an old popular belief that the source was inhabited by a protective soul. The sacred oasis is made up of an area for agriculture, natural reserve area for plants and animals (flora and fauna), and camp area for tourists with its source. The sacred oasis is part of the 123,000 hectares of the Iriqui National Park, created in 1994.
The oasis is sacred because it has the most precious wealth of the desert: water. Oum Lâalag was a reassuring water supplied site for Nomads to water their camels for a very long time. The sacred oasis of Oum Lâalag remains protected by locals.
“Ras” is an Arabic word that means a head, but it symbolically means the center. “Nkhal” is a dialectic Arabic word that means date palm trees. Ras Nkhal, therefore, stands for the center of date palm groves. It is an area full of palm groves, small dunes, and green plants as well as Tamarisk trees. Ras Nkhal is situated withing 6 kilometers from M’hamid El Ghizlane, Zagora, Morocco. Ras Nkhal is also an ideal place steeped in history, crossed by numerous caravans.
